- Cermonews #6 | Why is data valuable in public transportation?
Hello After a small break, Cermonews 6th issue is with you with its renewed format. While creating this newsletter, we wanted to create a series where we can talk and share information on many topics such as sustainable mobility, smart transportation, especially public transportation. After creating it, we said, let's make it thematic and let's deal with the newsletter on a sub-topic every month. Today we come to you with the first of this! Under the title of “Data in public transportation” Why is data valuable? Which data is used and why? An example of optimization with public transport data from Italy We will share with you the latest news from Cermoni, our public transportation decision support system that gives this newsletter its name. So, is it over? No! Last but not least, don't leave without checking out the “In the Kitchen” section, where every month we will introduce you to a teammate behind Cermoni Enjoy your reading! Why is data valuable? Today, in every aspect of our lives, from the simplest decisions to the most complex problems, we reach conclusions by utilizing data. Today, data, which is critical for making strategic decisions and making operations efficient, can optimize the performance of businesses and enable them to produce innovative solutions when analyzed correctly. The Importance of Data in Public Transportation When we examine the graph above, we see a steady increase in the number of public transportation users starting from 2023. This increase is projected to reach 4.49 billion users in 2027. The data used in public transportation, especially the service mass, plays a critical role in the planning and management of these systems. The Power of Data in Public Transportation : Data-Based Decision Making and Strategy Development Data analytics helps to make strategic decisions in critical areas such as capacity planning, resource allocation, investment decisions, service quality improvements and public transport resilience. In this way, passenger satisfaction and service efficiency can be increased while optimizing costs. Everything from timetables to vehicle locations, from ridership figures to route maps, keeps these systems running smoothly and efficiently. Financial data ensures sustainability, while passenger experience data ensures a user-friendly service. Safety, environmental and regulatory data ensure that the system is safe, green and compliant. Demand data is the most important input for the efficient and effective operation of the public transportation system. Technologies such as smart cards, AVL (Audio-Video-Light) automation systems, turnstile and boarding counts, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth monitoring, image sensors and passenger surveys are used to understand and manage this demand. When interpreted correctly, data enables effective management at strategic, tactical and operational levels. Long-term plans are made at the strategic level, daily operations are improved at the tactical level and instant decisions are made at the operational level. Real-time data is critical for rapid response. How Modena, Italy adapted its public transport planning to the data-driven 30 km/h speed limit regulation? What was the need? Vignola is a small city in the Modena Region of Italy, with a high level of interaction with the surrounding areas. With the recently introduced 30 km/h speed limit, public transportation needs to be planned accordingly. The need for a more cost-effective and efficient public transportation planning that is both in line with the legal regulations and meets the demand has emerged. What was intended? For the company, which wanted to use the number of vehicles and drivers at the optimum level for the currently proposed timetable, the goal was to improve the public transportation service with fewer vehicles and lower costs, without compromising service quality, in compliance with new legal regulations and reducing environmental impacts. Conclusion: Better public transportation planning with fewer vehicles and drivers Compared to the current timetable, the number of vehicles has been reduced from 26 to 24. A similar improvement was achieved in the number of drivers, with 28 drivers instead of 31, making the same timetable sustainable. This planning process not only reduced the number of vehicles, but also the total mileage and carbon emissions. News from Us We were with you at ITS Summit and Busworld Türkiye! - Importance of Spatiotemporal Evaluation of Public Transportation Metrics
The European Transport Conference 2020 Aim and Scope: Public transit (PT) is a necessary but very challenging component of sustainable transport, as PT operations are very costly (and often subsidized) and have traditionally been planned according to land use and travel demand forecasts. Smart Card (SC) data holds great potential to reveal insights regarding the performance of PT services; however, it needs efficient analysis and visualization tools and the selection of appropriate metrics to evaluate and portray PT characteristics. This study focuses on portraying the importance of spatiotemporal evaluation of PT demand characteristics as opposed to aggregate values using some selected measures. The numeric results are obtained using SC data from the metropolitan city of Konya, Turkey. The study includes the evaluation of aggregate and hourly disaggregated data for selected ridership metrics of total trips (R), transfer trips (TR), and discounted trips (DR) in a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment.
